Turtles
The coasts of Northern Cyprus
are major nesting sites for the critically endangered Mediterranean Marine Turtles,
of which are 2 types, The Chelonia Mydas and Carat Caretta. The turtles become
mature to mate at 25-30 years old, until then they live in the waters of Egypt,Libya
and Turkey. The turtles start to come ashore in mid May to the end of July,
and the hatchlings emerge from their nests from 45-50 days incubation in the
hot sand, so the hatchlings can be seen into September. Visitors can see both
the laying and hatching, under strict supervision, organized from HQ near Alagadi
beach, which is on the coast road east of Kyrenia.
